My Skin Care Revealed!

“Hi, Ieka.
I hope you don’t mind me asking
but what skin care do you use for your skin?”

This is the most frequently asked question I’ve received. Honestly, my skin is not perfect. I do have pimples and blackheads now and then but it only occurs when I’m not taking care of my skin very well. There are times when I don’t feel like washing my face or wearing toner after coming home late from work. This attitude often leads to the growth of pimples on my skin. So, whether you like it or not, it will require a lot of effort to get good skin. In this post, I will reveal my previous and current skin care product, sharing you some of my knowledge about skin and also my daily skin care routine.

Before I begin sharing, I’d like to clarify that I am not a skin expert and certain things I share might work on your skin or not at all. So, it’s best to consult with your doctor first before taking any actions.

Most of you will agree if I say that we all want and fantasise white skin. We will do anything to get fair skin because it is embedded in our minds and culture that women with white skin are considered beautiful. But this belief is also what affects the skin of most Asian women these days.

It is important for you to realise and understand that all skin colours are beautiful. We shouldn’t define beauty by one’s skin colour. It’s okay if you are born with dark skin, embrace that beauty. You are not any less beautiful than other girls with fair skin out there.

Personally, I believe that all skin colours are beautiful but my aim is to have healthy skin. No matter what your skin colour is, if your skin is healthy, it will enhance your beauty and glow. To describe my skin condition, my current skin type is combination. Here is another thing to take note – you have to get to know your skin type first before choosing which skin care product to use.

For your information, I had a terrible experience with acne when I was in college. It was really bad I had to wear foundation every day to cover up my severe acne. The most part affected was my forehead. Starting with this experience I began to search and learn more about my skin. The skin care product I used to cure my acne problem was The Skin Food in Green Tea range and it really worked.

Few years later, I went through another acne problem when I was 20 years old. It wasn’t as bad as it was before but of course it did make me feel less confident about myself. My skin was getting darker and dull because of the untreated dead skin. During this time, I started to wear heavy makeup so that it could blur my acne. It did work but I didn’t feel comfortable at all. It was at the end of that year that I discovered Tabita – a product which I heard could help to reduce acne problem. Back then, I didn’t know how effective this product was. I knew that it could whiten our skin but that time all I wanted was to get rid of my acne. So I bought it from a friend of mine who was also using Tabita that time. The first two weeks of usage, my skin had to go through very painful experience. But on the third week, my acne faded and eventually disappeared.

I used Tabita for almost 4 years. Somewhere during the fourth year, pimples started to grow on my skin. Tabita was no longer working for me. I had to search for other product to cure my pimples and that was when I discovered Cantiqa’s serum. It helped a lot and my skin was getting softer too.

It wasn’t because of the pimples that I decided to stop using Tabita. The main reason why I quitted this skin care product was because of its long term health effect. I only knew that Tabita contains mercury when the news went viral.

The dangerous thing about wearing skin care product that contains mercury is it can affect your womb. Children including unborn babies are most vulnerable to mercury poisoning because their developing brains and nervous systems are sensitive to it. Exposure to mercury products can affect thinking, memory, attention, language, fine motor skills and visual-spatial abilities such as drawing. Mercury exposure in the womb can result from a mother’s skin care product.

From this experience, I’ve learned to be more careful when purchasing skin care products. There is no point on getting fair and flawless skin when in long term it could affect your health. That moment on, I’ve changed my goal from getting flawless skin to getting healthy skin.

My current skin care product is Paula’s Choice. Alhamdulillah, so far this product works wonders for me. Apart from this product, I also use Sendayu Tinggi skin care product. I’ve also learned a lot about skin from watching Kak Yatie’s videos on her Instagram, Facebook and Youtube channel. To break the product down into parts, I’m using Paula’s Choice cleanser, toner, blemish treatment, and moisturiser. As for Sendayu Tinggi, I use their scar toner whenever I’m running out of Paula’s Choice toner.

For my daily skin care routine, in the morning, I will start by washing my face with facial cleanser. After washing my face, I will use toner and let it seeps into the skin for one minute. When pimples appear on my skin, I will apply the blemish treatment to control excessive oil. Once I’m done with that, the next thing I will do is applying moisturiser.

At night time, I will start my skin care routine with facial scrub. The product that I use is Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream. Then, I will continue with the rest of the steps above except moisturiser application. Recently, I’ve been making it a routine to wear face mask such as hydrating mask every night. You can get it at any Watsons outlets nearby.

Another product I use for my skin is my own essential oil product called Seri 7 Anggun. I usually use it during bath time. Apart from keeping my skin healthy and glowing, it also helps to promote blood circulation and giving you calming sensation. It also helps to brighten the skin complexion as it contains daisy flower essence. Once in a while, I will mix one drop of Seri 7 Anggun with my moisturiser and apply it on my face at night. You can find more info and purchase this product at @seribyiekaahmad.

So, now that I’ve revealed and explained to you my skin care regime, I’d also like to share to you some of the things that I do or eat to get healthy skin. Keep reading to find out more.

Taking care of our skin is not just about making sure you wash your face every day because some women also do the same thing but still experiencing pimples and acne. If this happens to you, then you should start consider looking at your lifestyle – from the food that you eat, your sleeping patterns, to your personal hygiene.

Personal hygiene is very important. Not all women, especially the ones wearing hijab, realise that irregularly washing your hair could be the cause of your acne growth. So be sure to make it a habit to take care of your personal hygiene.

For extra skin care tips, try clean eating because it helped me to get healthy skin when I was in Australia. One of my every day habits now is drinking hot squeezed lemon in the morning. This helps to cleanse our intestines. When your digestive tract is clean, it is easy for supplement absorption to take place. Drinking green tea also helps to get healthy skin. If your acne is very severe, try avoid eating food that contains dairy products such as milk and cheese.

So, there you go I’ve revealed my skin care product and routine!

Small Changes

The first time I shared my previous fitness journey on social media, I’ve received so many feedbacks from my followers. Some of them were encouraging messages and some were questioning how I did that. Not to mention – some were also tired of all the sharing and demanded to see the ‘present me’. Of course, I don’t blame them for feeling that way. It could be because I posted a lot of throwback pictures and none of them were from the recent ones.

Before I decided to be more opened about my body weight issue, I had to rethink about it multiple times. None of my friends knew about my struggle because I had never mentioned it to them. Imagine you’ve been keeping a dark secret your entire live then finally decided to tell the whole word about it. It was not easy. But one day, I told myself that maybe by sharing my story I can help to add value in other people’s life. I can inspire those who are struggling just like me and let them know that changes can be made. All it takes is merely decision and action.

I know by sharing my previous workout routines and pictures without showing the present results will make it sound less convincing or just an empty talk, but I also know and understand that results take time. So to these people who wanted to see the ‘current me’, I told them I will share it – but when the time is right.

Revealing my overweight picture from recent year for the first time took a lot of courage. Even writing this makes me nervous. I’m not sure if this is the right decision but I realised that sharing these small changes can also benefit me emotionally. At least I know my hard work is slowly paying off.

If you have been reading my recent post, you will notice that I said I was at my heaviest last year. But looking back at this picture, I guess, I was at my heaviest in 2016.

As you can see, I was very different from a few years ago. I hope by seeing this picture, you can relate more to my previous posts. I was attending a friend’s wedding when this picture was taken. I swear, I wasn’t feeling confident to meet anyone. The whole time I kept praying that no one would notice me.

The pictures below are the recent ones taken today (top) and just a few days ago (bottom). To be honest, I’m very happy with the results. I feel even more motivated to go to the gym and achieve my goals.

Alhamdulillah. I’m enjoying the progress so far. I remember trying to fit in one of my jeans which were once too small for me. When I put it on, it was so easy. Most of my once-fit-clothes are now wearable. Even the dress that I’m wearing in this picture was once too fit for me. Now, I can comfortably wear it all day long.

The happiest moment of my life is when I can take OOTD pictures again without feeling disgusted looking at myself. I’m very grateful for these small changes I’m experiencing now and I hope that it will inspire you to make some changes in your life too.

Until then, good night everyone!
